Question

Discuss any five problems faced by trade unions in India.

Answer in Brief

Solution

  1. Small Size: Trade unions in India have low membership. They suffer from inadequate funds because all the members do not pay the small membership subscription on time. Unions are too small to be viable. A major part of the working class in India has no unions.
  2. Lack of Unity: Workers in India are divided according to race, religion, caste, language, etc. There are a number of unions in the same industry and workers are divided between different unions. There is rivalry between different unions.
  3. Illiteracy: The majority of workers in India are illiterate. They do not understand the aims and roles of unions. They are easily misled by political parties and other vested interests.
  4. Political Leadership: Trade unions in India are controlled by political parties. Political leaders use unions for their own selfish gains and do not always work for the interests of workers.
  5. Opposition from Employers: Most employers adopt a hostile attitude towards trade unions. They victimise union leaders and try to divide and rule unions. The government has also not given adequate support to trade unions.
