Question
Discuss any four causes of the Yom Kippur War (1973).
Solution
Causes of the Yorn Kippur War (1973):
- Territorial Losses from the Six-Day War: Egypt lost the Sinai Peninsula and Gaza Strip, Jordan lost the West Bank and Eastern Jerusalem, and Syria lost the Golan Heights as a result of Israel's victory in the 1967 Six-Day War. The Arab governments sought to reverse this scenario because they found Israel's large geographical advances unacceptable.
- Egypt's Desire for Sinai Recovery: Under President Anwar Sadat, Egypt's goal was to reclaim the Sinai Peninsula. Realising that direct talks might not provide good conditions because of Israel's strong position after 1967, Sadat chose to use military force to change the status quo and create an atmosphere that would be favourable for peace talks.
- Diplomatic Strategy and Military Preparation: By removing Soviet advisors, Sadat hinted at a desire for peace and announced a change in diplomatic strategy toward the US. At the same time, he strengthened his military capabilities by forming an alliance with Syria and acquiring modern Soviet weapons to plan a coordinated surprise attack against Israel.
- Surprise Attack during Yom Kippur: The invasion was strategically timed to coincide with Yom Kippur, a major Jewish holiday, taking advantage of the fact that many Israeli soldiers were on vacation and maximising the element of surprise and early Arab advances.
