Question
Discuss any four reasons for the failure of the Janata government (1977-79).
Answer in Brief
Solution
The Janata government failed because of the following reasons:
- The socialists and religious Janata politicians subscribed to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's Hindu nationalist agenda.
- In the studies after the emergency, the government gained few judgements and could not support most of the allegations.
- Due to a lack of evidence, Indira Gandhi's cases also declined, and her supporters' anger and the Indian public's sympathy for her increased due to the ongoing hearing.
- As the economy weakened and charges of nepotism and corruption involving his family surfaced, Morarji Desai's support had significantly decreased by 1979.
- The religious and socialist MPs in the party also stopped supporting Desai because they believed he was working with the Hindu nationalists.
- Desai left the administration on July 19, 1979, and subsequently took his retirement at home.
- Due to his poor health, Jayaprakash Narayan found it difficult to continue his political career and serve as a united force; as a result, the party lost its most famous leader when he passed away in 1979.
- The rebels replaced Desai as prime minister with Chaudhary Charan Singh. Additionally, he could not deal with it long after the Prime Minister and the Janata management failed.
