Question
Do you think parthenocarpy and apomixis are different process? Justify?
Short Note
Solution
- The formation of fruit from the ovary without the act of fertilization is called parthenocarpy.
- A method of reproduction that does not involve the union of male-female gametes is called apomixis. Thus apomixis and parthenocarpy are asexual modes of reproduction.
- But Apomixis refers to the formation of seeds without fertilization. Whereas parthenocarpy refers to the formation of fruits without fertilization.
In Apomixis, the megaspore mother cell does not undergo meiosis, or the cell from the nucellus develops into the embryo.
In parthenocarpy, the ovary becomes a fruit without fertilization and thus fruits are seedless.
Thus Apomixis and parthenocarpy are different processes.
