Question
Explain any three reasons for spending more on traditional security than on non-traditional security by India.
Explain
Solution
- India spends more on standard security because of where it is strategically located. Since India doesn't get along with its neighbors, it went to war with Pakistan in 1947, 1965, 1971, and 1999, and with China in 1962. India has made its forces stronger to avoid these wars and keep people safe.
- Two nuclear states are on either side of India, and ties between the three are tense. Under its 'No First Use' policy on nuclear weapons, India performed two successful nuclear tests in 1974 and 1999 to protect national security.
- Since India became independent, regional ambitions have put its internal security at risk. This can be seen in places like Nagaland, Mizoram, Punjab, and Kashmir, where people have often taken violent actions that have required force to restore law and order.
