Question

Explain the bonding in coordination compounds in terms of Werner’s postulates.

Explain

Solution

The main postulates are:

  1. In coordination compounds, metals show two types of valencies – primary and secondary.
  2. Primary valencies are generally related to the oxidation state of the metal atom and are ionizable. These valencies are satisfied by negative ions.
  3. Secondary valencies are related to the coordination number of the metal atom. Secondary valencies are non-ionizable. They are satisfied by neutral molecules or negative ions. Secondary valency is equal to the coordination number and its value is generally fixed for a metal.
  4. The ion groups bonded to the metal through secondary valence are specifically arranged in space corresponding to different coordination numbers.
