Questions

Explain the following concept in 25 to 30 words:

Verbal tests of intelligence

Write short notes on the following:

Verbal tests of intelligence.

Answer in Brief

Solution

"Intelligence is an ability to think on an abstract level."

David Wechsler defines intelligence as, " the aggregate or global capacity of an individual to act purposefully, to think rationally and to deal effectively with his environment".

Intelligence tests are classified into verbal and nonverbal intelligence tests based on the material used in the tests. Verbal intelligence tests are intelligence tests that use language (words or numbers) to assess intelligence. Subjects are required to respond verbally to test items in these tests. Verbal intelligence tests include the Army Alpha Test, Weschler's Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS), and others.

  1. Advantages of verbal tests of intelligence: These are useful to measure higher mental abilities and differentiate between people having average and above-average intelligence.
  2. Disadvantages of verbal tests of intelligence: They cannot be given to people having different linguistic backgrounds, illiterate people, and small children.
