1. Telephone lines transfer analogue data, but computers keep digital data. To connect a computer to the internet via phone, it must transform digital data to analogue before sending signals.
2. Changing the signal form is termed modulation, and returning it to its original form is called demodulation.
3. Modem modulates/demodulates. Modems connect computers to the internet. Modems convert digital to analogue and vice versa.
4. They have two advantages:
   1. Modern allows higher speed of transmission on any given analog line.
   2. Modem reduces noise and distortion.
5. The function of modem is described by following figure.
   
6. The transmission technique divides modems into two categories:
   1. Asynchronous modems
   2. Synchronous modems
