Question

Explain the following:

Silicon forms \[\ce{SiF^{2-}6}\] ion whereas corresponding fluoro compound of carbon is not known.

Short Note

Solution

Silicon has 3d-orbitals in the valence shell and thus expands its octet giving sp3d2 hybridisation while d-orbitals are not present in the valence shell of carbon. It can undergo ip3-hybridisation only. Thus, carbon is unable to form \[\ce{CF^{2-}6}\] anion.
