Find the angle between the lines x-14=y-31=z8  and x-22=y+12=z-41

Solution

Let a¯ and b¯ be the vectors in the direction of the lines x-14=y-31=z8  and x-22=y+12=z-41respectively.

a¯=4i^+j^+8k^ and b¯=2i^+2j^+k^

a¯.b¯=4×2+1×2+8×1=8+2+8=18

and

|a¯|=16+1+64=81=9

b¯=4+1+4=9=3 

Let Θ be the acute angle between the two given lines.

cosθ=a¯.b¯|a¯|.|b¯|=189×3=23

θ=cos-1(23)
