Question
Find the area of the shaded portion in the following figure.
Solution
Area of shaded region = Area of the circle – Area of four triangles – Area of a square
Area of four triangles = `4 xx 1/2 xx "Base" xx "Height"`
= `4 xx 1/2 xx 7 xx 7`
= `(4 xx 49)/2`
= 2 × 49
= 98 cm2
Area of a square = (Side)2
= (7)2
= 49 cm2
Area of the circle = πr2
= `22/7 xx 21/2 xx 21/2`
= `(11 xx 3 xx 21)/2`
= `693/2`
= 346.5 cm2
Area of shaded region = (346.5 – 98 – 49)
= 199.5 cm2
