Question

Find the equation of a lined passage through (3,6) and making intercepts equal magnitude but opposite in sign-on both the axes.

Sum

Solution

Let x-intercept of the line be a and y-intercept of the line be b.

∴ b =-a

∴ Equation of the line in double intercept form is

`x/a +y/b =1`

∴ `x/a+y/-a = 1`

∴ x - y= a

The equation of the line passes through (3,6).

∴ a = 3 - 6

∴ a = -3

∴ Equation of the line is

 x- y = -3

∴ x - y + 3 = 0

∴ The required equation of line x - y +3 = 0
