Question

Find the other trigonometric functions:

If cos θ = `-3/5` and 180° < θ < 270°.

Sum

Solution

Since 180° < θ < 270°, θ lies in the third quadrant.

We have cos θ = `-3/5`

Now, sin2θ + cos2θ = 1

∴ sin2θ = 1 – cos2θ = `1 - (-3/5)^2`

= `1 - 9/25`

= `16/25`

∴ sin θ = `± 4/5`

But θ lies in the third quadrant.

∴ sin θ is negative.

∴ sin θ = `-4/5`

∴ cosec θ = `1/sinθ = 1/((-4/5)) = -5/4`

sec θ = `1/cosθ = 1/((-3/5))= -5/3`

tan θ = `sinθ/cosθ = ((-(4)/5))/((-(3)/5)) = 4/3`

cot θ = `1/tanθ = 1/((4/3)) = 3/4`
