Question

Find the ratio in which the y-axis divides the line segment joining the points (4, −5) and (−1, 2). Also find the point of intersection.

Sum

Solution

Let the required point on the y-axis be P(0, y).

Let AP : PB be k : 1

Therefore, `(-k + 4)/(k + 1) = 0`

⇒ k = 4

Therefore, the required ratio is 4 : 1

and 𝑦 = `(8−5)/5 = 3/5`

Hence, the point of intersection is `(0, 3/5)`.
