Question
Give geographical reason
Geographical factors have an effect on transportation and trade.
Solution
- Relief, location and climate are the three major physical factors governing the development of transportation networks. For example, it is easier to build rails, roads and pipelines where relief is not rugged whereas it is difficult in hilly, mountainous and dense forest region.
- Similarly, the natural resources available in one region will be different from those available in another region. This factor influences the trade activity. For example, a country which has rich soil would have thriving agriculture and thereby, export agricultural products. On the other hand, Gulf countries which are rich in mineral oil export oil and import agricultural products.
- Coastal areas are favourable for development of ports and harbours. The broken coastlines have important place in international trade through ocean routes.
- Climate also influences the trade through its impact on plants and animals found in any region. For example, tropical countries produce and export bananas, rice, cocoa, tea and coffee etc. while the countries which are snow covered for a major part of the year, export meat and woollen products.
Hence, we can say that geographical factors have effect on transportation and trade.
