Question

Give scientific reasons.

Sometimes, higher plants and animals too perform anaerobic respiration.

Give Reasons

Solution

Microorganisms frequently engage in anaerobic respiration, which takes place in the absence of oxygen. Nonetheless, higher plants and animals can also engage in anaerobic respiration under specific circumstances:

  • In higher plants: Plant roots suffer from a shortage of oxygen when they are immersed in soggy soil. Under these circumstances, anaerobic respiration occurs in plant cells, producing carbon dioxide and ethanol as byproducts.
  • In Animals: When the oxygen supply is sufficient during intense exercise, muscle cells engage in anaerobic respiration. Lactic acid is produced as a result, leading to cramping and muscle exhaustion.
