Highlight any four consequences of the imposition of Emergency in India in 1975.

1. It invoked Article 352 of the Constitution, which states that the Union government effectively suspends the federal distribution of powers and concentrates all power in its hands.
2. Secondly, the government is also granted the authority to restrict or curtail all or any of the Fundamental Rights during an emergency. The government intensified political tension, prohibited strikes, and imprisoned numerous opposition leaders.
3. In order to implement its emergency powers, the government suspended press freedom. The government extensively implemented preventive detention.
4. This provision led to the arrest and detention of individuals. Kannada writer Shivarama Karanth, who received the Padma Bhushan, and Hindi writer Fanisharnath Renu, who received the Padma Shri, returned their awards in protest of the suspension of democracy.
