When he travelled to New Mullion to see Oliver Lutkins, whom he had a summons for, Lutkins made friends with him in an effort to impress the lawyer. They visited Bieneke, Gustaffson, Gray's barbershop, and then Lutkin's residence. In this way Lutkins, the hack driver took the lawyer all around the village to search for Lutkins.
