Question
(i) Find the maximum frequency of X-rays produced by an X-ray tube operating at a tube potential of 66 kV.
(ii) State any one difference between characteristic X-rays and continuous X-rays.
Solution
(i) Potential difference V = 66 × 103 V
Maximum frequency =`(ev)/h`
` =(1.6 xx 10^(-19) xx66xx10^3)/(6.6 xx10^(-34))`
= 1.6 ×10-19 × 104 × 1034
Maximum frequency = 1.6 v × 1019 Hz.
(ii) Continuous X-rays consists of all possible wavelength of X-rays with the lower wavelength limit whereas characteristic or line X-rays consists of definite wavelength superimposed on continuous X-ray.
