Question

If the numerator of a fraction is increased by 50% and the denominator is decreased by 20%, then it becomes `3/5`. Find the original fraction

Sum

Solution

Original fraction = `x/y`

Numerator increased by 50%

∴ Numerator = `150/100 x`

Denominator decreased by 20%

∴ Denominator = `80/100 y`

Hence

`(150/100 x)/(80/100 y) = 3/5`

`(15/10 x)/(8/10 y) = 3/5`

`(15x)/10 xx 10/(8x) = 3/5`

`x/y = 3/5 xx 8/15 = 8/25`
