Question
In a hurdle race, Nidhi is over hurdle B and `2/6` of the way through the race, as shown in figure.
Then, answer the following:
- Where will Nidhi be, when she is `4/6` of the way through the race?
- Where will Nidhi be when she is `5/6` of the way through the race?
- Give two fractions to tell what part of the race Nidhi has finished when she is over hurdle C.
Sum
Solution
Since, If Nidhi is at B, then `2/6` of the way is completed.
∴ If she is at A, she will cover = `((2/6))/2 xx 1`
= `2/(6 xx 2)`
= `1/6` way
a. When she is `4/6` of the way, she will be at `((4/6))/((1/6))` position
= `(4/6 xx 6/1)` .......[∵ Reciprocal of `1/6` = 6]
= 4th position
= D
b. When she is `5/6` of the way, she will be at `((5/6))/((1/6))` position
= `5/6 xx 6/1`
= 5th position
= E
c. When she is over hurdle C, she has completed half race.
Hence, she will be at `3/6` way = `3/6 = 1/2` way
