Question

In a pack of 52 playing cards one card is lost. From the remaining cards, a card is drawn at random. Find the probability that the drawn card is queen of heart, if the lost card is a black card.

Numerical

Solution

Initially, there are 52 cards in a standard pack. After one card is lost, only 51 cards remain in the pack.

In a standard deck, there are 26 black cards (13 clubs and 13 spades). If one of these black cards is lost, none of the remaining cards is affected, and all red cards (26) are intact.

The queen of hearts is a red card, so the queen of hearts is still present in the remaining pack of 51 cards.

Since there is exactly one queen of hearts in the remaining 51 cards, the probability of drawing it is:

P (queen of hearts) = `1/51`
