Question

In a reaction, \[\ce{2A -> Products}\], the concentration of A decreases from 0.5 mol L−1 to 0.4 mol L−1 in 10 minutes. Calculate the rate during this interval?

Numerical

Solution

Average rate  = `-1/2(Δ["A"])/(Δ"t")`

= `-1/2 (["A"]_2 - ["A"]_1)/("t"_2 - "t"_1)`

= `-1/2 ((0.4  "M" - 0.5  "M")/(10  "min"))`

= -`1/2 (-0.1)/10`

= `-1/2 ((-0.1  "M")/(10  "min"))`

= 5 × 10−3 M min−1
