Question
It is known that red muscle fibres in animals can work for longer periods of time continuously. How is this possible?
Solution
The red muscle fibres are thinner than the white muscle fibres. Their functionality can be extended for a longer period of time without becoming fatigued. They can function continuously for a long period of time due to the following factors:
When myoglobin is abundant, oxygen is readily available.
Their energy comes from aerobic respiration. As a result, they do not produce lactic acid in their muscles.
This means there is a large amount of stored ATP in these muscles because there are many mitochondria. Therefore, these muscles are able to work for a longer period of time.
