Question
Lightning and thunder take place in the sky at the same time and at the same distance from us. Lightning is seen earlier and thunder is heard later. Can you explain?
Solution
We know that the speed of sound is 330 m/s, while the speed of light is 300,000,000 m/s. Thus, we can say that the speed of light will be greater than that of sound. That is, light travels faster than sound. This is why when there is thunder and lightning, the lightning is seen first, and the thunder is heard later.
