Question
Sketch larynx and explain its function in your own words.
Solution
The larynx is the upper section of the trachea. It is also known as the voice box. The larynx houses the voice cords. These are V-shaped muscle tissue ridges on the larynx's inside lining. They vibrate when air moves between them, resulting in voice. When you breathe in, air enters the larynx and travels down the trachea to the lungs. When you swallow, the larynx slides slightly higher, and the epiglottis, a flap of cartilage tissue at the rear of the tongue, closes over the laryngeal entrance. This guarantees that food and drink travel down the oesophagus (gullet) rather than the trachea.
