Question

Name the parts of an angiosperm flower in which development of male and female gametophyte take place.

Answer in Brief

Solution

Angiosperm plants are flowering plants. The flower is a modified shoot whose function is reproduction. The flower has the following four whorls –

  1. Calyx - It is formed from sepals.
  2. Corolla - It is formed from petals.
  3. Androecium - It is formed from stamens. It is called the male reproductive cycle of the flower.
  4. Gynoecium - It is formed from carpels. It is called the female reproductive cycle of the flower.

Pollen grains are produced from pollen mother cells in the anther of stamen by meiotic division. Pollen grains are called male gametophyte.

The carpel has three parts – ovary, style and stigma. The ovule is formed in the ovary. The female gametophyte or embryo sac develops from the haploid megaspore by meiotic division from the megaspore mother cell of the nucellus of the ovule.
