Question
On the eve of Gandhi Jayanti a saree is sold for Rs 720 after allowing 20% discount. What is its marked price?
Solution
\[\text { Given }, \]
\[\text { SP of the saree = Rs . 720 }\]
\[\text { Discount on the saree = 20 % } \]
\[\text { We know, Discount % } = \frac{\text { Discount }}{MP} \times 100\]
\[\text { Or, Discount } = \frac{\text { Discount % } \times MP}{100}\]
\[\text { Let the MP of the saree be Rs } . x\]
\[\text { Therefore, Discount }= \frac{20}{100}x = Rs . 0 . 02x\]
\[\text { Since S . P = MP - Discount }, \]
\[720 = x - 0 . 20x\]
\[720 = 0 . 80x\]
\[x = \frac{720}{0 . 80}\]
\[ = Rs . 900\]
\[\text { Thus, the MP of the saree is Rs } . 900 .\]
