Question

One card is randomly drawn from a pack of 52 cards. Find the probability that: the drawn card is red.

Sum

Solution

In randomly drawing a card from 52 cards.

n(S) = 52

Let A denote the event that the drawn card is red.

n(A) = 26

∴ P(A) = `"n(A)"/"n(S)" = 26/52 = 1/2`.

A bag contains in all 50 balls. Some of them are white, some are blue and some are red. The number of white balls is 11 times the number of blue balls. The number of red balls is less than the number of white balls. Also, the number of red balls is more than the number of blue balls. If one of the balls is selected at random from the bag, what is the probability that it is red ?

Total number of cards, S = `square`

Let E be the event that the choosen card is a queen.

Number of queens = `square`

Thus, P(E) = `"Number of queens"/"Total number of cards" = square/square = square`
