Question

Predict the hybridisation of each carbon in the molecule of organic compound given below. Also indicate the total number of sigma and pi bonds in this molecule.

\[\begin{array}{cc}
\phantom{.............}\ce{O}\phantom{............}\ce{O}\phantom{}\\
\phantom{.............}||\phantom{...........}//\phantom{.}\\
\ce{CH ≡ C - C - CH2 - C}\\
\phantom{........................}\backslash\\
\phantom{.............................}\ce{OH}
\end{array}\]

Short Note

Solution

In the above structure, two carbon atoms which are linked through a triple bond are sp hybridized. Two carbonyl \[\ce{(-C = O)}\] carbon atoms are sp2 hybridized. The \[\ce{-CH2}\] carbon atom is sp3 hybridized.

From the above-given molecule it is clear that there are 11 − σ bonds and 4 − π bonds.
