Question
Refractive index of diamond with respect to glass is 1.6 and absolute refractive index of glass is 1.5. Find out the absolute refractive index of diamond.
Solution
Given:
Refractive Index of glass (ng) = 1.5
Refractive Index of diamond with respect to glass (ndg) = 1.6
Refractive index of diamond with respect to glass =
`("Refractive index of diamond" ("n"_"d"))/("Refractive index of glass")`
`1.6 = "n"_"d"/1.5`
nd = 1.5 × 1.6
= 2.4
Hence, the absolute refractive index of diamond is 2.4.
