Question

The velocity of light in a medium is 1.5 x 188 m/s. What is the refractive index of the medium with respect to air, if the velocity in the air is 3 x 108 m/s?

Sum

Solution

Given data:
V1 = 3 x 108 m/s;
V2 = 1.5 x 108 m/s ;
1η2 = ?
Solution:
We know that,
1η2 = `("V"_1)/("V"_2)`
∴  1η2 =  `(3 xx 10^8) / (1.5 xx 18^8)`
1η2 = 2
The refractive index of the medium with respect to air is 2.
