Question
A light ray enters from medium A to medium B as shown in the figure.
If the speed of light in medium A is `v_a` and in medium B is `v_b`, what is the refractive index of B with respect to A.
Solution
Speed of light in rarer medium A `(v_a)` is greater then the speed of light in denser medium B `(v_b) i.e., v_a> v_2`
Thus, refractive index of B relative to A,
`n_(BA) = ("Speed of light in Medium A" (v_a))/("Speed of light in Medium B" (v_b))`
`n_(BA) = v_a/v_b`
⇒ `n>1`
