Question
Solve the following equation and calculate the answer correct to two decimal places:
x2 – 5x – 10 = 0.
Solution
x2 – 5x – 10 = 0
Comparing with ax2 + bx + c = 0, we have a = 1, b = –5, c = –10
Using quadratic formula
`x = (-b +- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac))/(2a)`
`=> x = (-(-5) + - sqrt((-5)^2 - 4(1)(-10))) /(2(1)`
`=> x = (5+- sqrt(25 + 40))/2`
`=> (5 +- sqrt65)/2`
`=> x = (5 +- 8.06)/2`
`=> x = 13.06/2, (-3.06)/2`
`=> x= 6.53, -1.53`
