Question
Solve the following equation for x and give, in the following case, your answer correct to 2 decimal places:
x2 – 5x – 10 = 0
Solution
x2 – 5x – 10 = 0
Here a = 1, b = –5 and c = –10
∴ `x = (-b +- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac))/(2a)`
= `(-(-5) +- sqrt((-5)^2 - 4 xx 1 xx (-10)))/(2 xx 1)`
= `(5 +- sqrt(25 + 40))/2`
= `(5 +- sqrt65)/2`
= `(5 +- 8.06)/2`
∴ `x = (5 + 8.06)/2` or `x = (5 - 8.06)/2`
`=> x = (13.06)/2` or `x = -(3.06)/2`
`=>` x = 6.53 or x = –1.53
