Question
Solve the following quadratic equation by formula method
2x2 – 5x + 2 = 0
Solution
a = 2, b = -5, c = 2
x = `(-"b" ± sqrt("b"^2 - 4"ac"))/(2"a")`
= `(5 ± sqrt(25 - 4(2)(2)))/4`
= `(5 ± sqrt(25 - 16))/4`
= `(5 ± sqrt(9))/4`
= `(5 ± 3)/4`
= `(5 + 3)/4` or `(5 - 3)/4`
= `(8)/(4)` or `(2)/(4)` = 2 or `(1)/(2)`
The solution set is `(1)/(2)` and 2
