Question

Solve, using the method of substitution

2x – 3y = 7, 5x + y = 9

Graph

Solution

2x – 3y = 7 → (1)

5x + y = 9 → (2)

Equation (2) becomes

y = 9 – 5x

Substitute the value of y in (1)

2x – 3(9 – 5x) = 7

2x – 27 + 15x = 7

17x = 7 + 27

17x = 34

x = `34/17`

= 2

Substitute the value of x = 2 (in) (2)

y = 9 – 5(2) = 9 – 10 = – 1

∴ The value of x = 2 and y = – 1
