Question
Some countries have excess food while some face a scarcity. Explain any two causes of such food imbalance.
Long Answer
Solution
- Economic inequality: Economic inequality among nations and other factors have contributed to a global food system whereby a billion people are hungry, another billion suffer from hidden hunger, and another billion are substantially overconsuming. Malnutrition and undernutrition are generally caused by poverty.
- Distributional Inequality: Three-quarters of the world's population is inadequately fed, and the majority of these live in developing countries. Massive surpluses exist in Europe and the US. Right now, there is too much food in the developed countries and not enough in the developing countries. Developing countries are starving to death, and the developed countries are worried about which type of cheese they should buy. This is called an imbalance in the food supply.
