State any three points of importance of the 'Directing' function of management.
Solution
- Directing helps to initiate action: Directing assists in initiating action by people in the organisation toward the achievement of desired goals. For example, if a supervisor guides his subordinates and clears their doubts about performing a task, the worker will be able to meet the work targets assigned to him.
- Directing integrates employees efforts in the organisation: Directing integrates employees' efforts in the organisation in such a way that each individual effort contributes to the overall performance of the organisation. As a result, it ensures that individuals work toward organisational goals. A manager with strong leadership skills, for example, will be able to persuade his subordinates that individual and team efforts will result in the achievement of organisational goals.
- Directing guides employees to fully realize their potential: By motivating and providing effective leadership, directing guides employees to fully realize their potential and capabilities. A good leader can always recognize his employees' potential and motivate them to work to their full potential.
- Directing facilitates the introduction of needed changes in the organisation: Directing facilitates the implementation of necessary organisational changes. People in general are resistant to change in the workplace. Effective directing through motivation, communication, and leadership helps to reduce such resistance and develop the necessary cooperation in implementing organisational changes. For example, if a manager wishes to implement a new accounting system, the accounting staff may initially be resistant. Employees may accept change and cooperate with the manager if the manager explains the purpose, provides training and motivates them with additional rewards.
- Directing helps to bring stability and balance to the organisation: Effective directing contributes to organisational stability and balance by encouraging cooperation and commitment among employees and assisting in the achievement of balance among various groups, activities, and departments.
