Question

State two steps taken by the Government of South Africa to bring down Apartheid.

Short Note

Solution

The new President of South Africa, President F.W. De Clerk in 1989, realized that the policy of Apartheid had failed, and began a process of bringing down Apartheid. In June 1991 he scrapped one of the most hated Apartheid law—The Population Registration Act. The Group Areas Act which had set separate areas for the settlement of different races and the lands Act was also abolished. The President signed a “National Peace Accord” with the major political parties to create a right climate for negotiations.
