Massacre at Sharpville took place on 21st March, 1960 when South African police opened fire on peaceful demonstrators protesting against the requirement that all Africans carry ‘reference books’. Consequently 69 persons died and 180 were injured. This incident brought the intervention of UNO the issue of Apartheid in South Africa, beckoned to do so, on the request of 29 African and Asian countries.
