Question

Sulphuric acid is manufactured by the contact process.

Give the conditions for the oxidation of \[\ce{SO2}\]

Long Answer

Solution

  1. The optimum temperature should be as low as possible. The yield has been found to be maximum at about 410°C-450°C.
  2. High pressure (2 atm) is favoured because the product formed has less volume than the reactant.
  3. Excess oxygen increases the production of sulphur trioxide.
  4. Vanadium pentoxide, or platinised asbestos, is used as a catalyst.
  5. Concentration of Reactants.
  6. A pure and dry mixture of two parts of \[\ce{SO2}\] and one part of \[\ce{O2}\] by vol. is used.
