Question

The cylinder B, diameter 400mm and weight 5kN, is held in position as shown in Figure 12 with the help of cable AB. Find the tension in the cable and the reaction developed at contact C.

Answer in Brief

Solution

tan(d) = `200/350`
d = 29.740
c + d = 450
c = 15.26

Using Lami’s theorem,

`5/sin (180 -15.26 - 45) = (F1)/sin (90+45) = (F2) /sin (90+15.26)`

F1 = 4.072 kN
F2 = 5.555 kN

The magnitudes of the tension in the cable and the reaction developed at C are 4.072 kN and 5.555 kN.
