Question

The printed price of a shirt is Rs. 390. Lokesh pays Rs. 175.50 for it after getting two successive discounts. If the first discount is 10%, find the second discount.

Sum

Solution

Marked price =  ₹ 390

After the first discount of 10%, the price of the shirt

= `390 - 10/100(390)`

= `390(1 - 1/10)`

= `390(9/10)`

Let the second discount be x %. Then

`390(9/10)(1 - "x"/100) = 175.5`    .....[Given that Lokesh bought the shirt for ₹ 175.50]

∴ `1 - "x"/100 = (175.5 xx 10)/(390 xx 9)`

= `(19.5 xx 10)/390`

= `195/390`

= `1/2`

∴ `"x"/100 = 1 - 1/2 = 1/2`

∴ x = 50

∴ The second discount is 50%
