Question
The product of two consecutive integers is 56. Find the integers.
Solution
Let the two consecutive integers be x and x + 1.
From the given information,
x(x + 1) = 56
x2 + x – 56 = 0
(x + 8)(x – 7) = 0
x = – 8 or 7
Thus, the required integers are – 8 and –7; 7 and 8.
