Question

There are 40 passengers in a bus, some with Rs. 3 tickets and remaining with Rs. 10 tickets. The total collection from these passengers is Rs. 295. Find how many passengers have tickets worth Rs. 3?

Sum

Solution

Given, total number of passengers = 40

Let the number of passengers having tickets worth ₹ 3 be x.

Then, the number of passengers having tickets worth ₹ 10 = (40 – x)

Total collection from passengers = ₹ 295  ...[Given]

According to the question,

3x + 10(40 – x) = 295

⇒ 3x + 400 – 10x = 295

⇒ – 7x = 295 – 400

⇒ – 7x = – 105

⇒ x = `-105 xx ((-1)/7)`

∴ x = 15

Hence, the number of passengers having tickets worth ₹ 3 is 15.
