Question

To solve the following simultaneous equations by Cramer's rule, find the values of Dx and Dy.

3x + 5y = 26

x + 5y = 22

Sum

Solution

3x + 5y = 26

x + 5y = 22

By Cramer's rule

Dx = `|(26, 5),(22, 5)|`

= 26 × 5 – 22 × 5

= 130 – 110

= 20

Dy = `|(3, 26),(1, 22)|`

= 3 × 22 – 1 × 26

= 66 – 26

= 40

∴ Dx = 20 and Dy = 40
