Question

Upper half of a convex lens is covered with a black paper. Draw a ray diagram to show the formation of image of an object placed at a distance of 2F from such a lens. Mention the position and nature of the image formed. State the observable difference in the image obtained if the lens is uncovered. Give reason to justify your answer.

Give Reasons

Solution

  1. The resulting image will be real, inverted, and located at the opposite side of the lens's focus point.
  2. When the lens is uncovered, the full item is displayed in the image, unlike when only the lower half of the lens is used, which only shows the lowest half.
  3. Using only the lower half of a lens allows only lower rays from the object to pass through, resulting in only the lower half of the image being formed.
  4. Using the entire lens allows all rays from an object to flow through and generate a complete image.
