Algae were categorised by Fritsch (1935) taking into account phylogeny, affinities, and the interactions between different forms. He divided the algae into groups primarily based on characteristics such as cell wall chemistry, reserve food material, flagellar number and location, pigment type, and plant body form. There are eleven classes of algae, but the three primary classes are Rhodophyceae, Phaeophyceae, and Chlorophyceae.
