Question
Write a note on the economic importance of algae.
Solution 1
Economic importance of algae are as follows:
- As food:
- 50% of the photosynthesis on Earth is done by algae. Algae are rich in carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins. Porphyra, Alleria, Alva, Sargassum, Laminaria, etc. are used as food items.
- Chlorella contains an abundant amount of proteins and vitamins. It is being recognised as the food of the future and it has every possibility of solving the food problem of our increasing population.
- In the algae business:
- Fossils/dead bodies of diatoms form diatomaceous soil. This soil can tolerate 1500°C temperature. It is used in a variety of industries; Such as metal coating, varnish, polish, toothpaste, heat-resistant surfaces, etc.
- Carrageenin is obtained from algae like Chondrus, Euchyma, etc. It is used in making cosmetics, shampoo, etc.
- Algin is obtained from Alaria, laminaria, etc. It is used in the manufacturing of non-flammable films, artificial fibres, etc. It is also used to stop blood flow during surgery.
- Iodine, bromine, etc. are obtained from many seaweeds.
- antibiotic chloralin is obtained from chlorella. It destroys bacteria. The presence of Cara and Nitella algae destroys mosquitoes in the reservoir; Therefore, they are helpful in eradicating malaria.
- Agar-agar is obtained from red algae, it is used for artificial culture.
Solution 2
Economic importance of algae
Algae have diverse economic uses. They perform half of the total carbon dioxide-fixation on earth by photosynthesis, acting as the primary producers in aquatic habitats.
- Food source: Many species of marine algae, such as Porphyra, Sargassum, and Laminaria, are edible. Chlorella and Spirulina are rich in proteins. Thus, they are used as food supplements.
- Commercial importance: Agar is used in the preparation of jellies and ice-cream. It is obtained from Gelidium and Gracilaria. Carrageenin is used as an emulsifier in chocolates, paints, and toothpastes. It is obtained from red algae.
- Medicines: Many red algae, such as Corallina, are used in treating worm infections.
